VN-Index inches up in fourth gaining session

The index started off strong with a gain of nearly 10 points in the morning to hit the 1,990 range and stayed in the green mostly before plunging in the afternoon and closing with a 0.44-point increase, its fourth gaining session in a row. Trading volume on the Ho Chi Minh City Stock Exchange (HoSE), on which the index is based, fell 4.7 percent to VND15.22 trillion ($659.5 million). The bourse saw 227 stocks gain and 190 lose. The VN30 basket, comprising the 30 largest capped stocks on the HoSE, saw 12 tickers gain, led by TPB of private TPBank, up 6.3 percent to a new all-time high of VND29,750. The ticker has surged 8.8 percent in the last three sessions. HDB of HDBank followed with a 3.5 percent gain. But unlike other private banking blue chips, the ticker has not been able to climb back to this year’s peak that it reached on January 15. It is still 4.5 percent away. US stocks gain ground in volatile session, Dow ends +1.0%

NEW YORK: Wall Street stocks finished higher on Thursday (Mar 19) following a volatile session as investors weighed massive government stimulus measures being proposed against some of the first data showing the sharp US economic slowdown underway. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.95 per cent to finish the session at 20,087.18, after swinging more than 1,200 points during the day. The broad-based S&P 500 climbed 11.29 points (0.47 per cent to close at 2,409.39, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index jumped 160.73 points (2.30 per cent) to end at 7,150.58, as large technology companies led the market. Economists are slashing their outlooks as more sectors of the US radically curtail activities, shutting down stores, cutting transportation routes and suspending or slowing manufacturing. Many analysts expect markets to remain highly volatile and under pressure until health authorities get a better grasp of the scale of the outbreak in the United States and how … [Read more...] about US stocks gain ground in volatile session, Dow ends +1.0%

Hopes of Chinese Super League return grow as teams start training

HONG KONG: Chinese football is inching towards a return to action, with teams resuming training this week, though questions remain over when exactly the country's top flight can kick off its coronavirus-delayed 2020 campaign. Chinese Super League clubs started to return to training on Monday, two months after the league's originally scheduled start date of Feb. 22 but still some time before the new season is likely to begin. While mid-April was previously touted as a possible date for the CSL's return, the positive test returned at the weekend by former Manchester United midfielder Marouane Fellaini may well have pushed that back. Football has been put on hold throughout the region due to the pandemic, with Japan delaying the restart of its top flight to May 9. But no matter the date, players and coaching staff are back on the training pitch in China after spending much of the year hunkered down overseas. "We trained at a modest level, mainly focusing on strength and … [Read more...] about Hopes of Chinese Super League return grow as teams start training

Dow up 4.9% as US stocks end volatile session sharply higher

NEW YORK: Wall Street stocks finished a topsy-turvy session sharply higher on Tuesday (Mar 10) in anticipation of US stimulus measures as oil prices bounced. A day after suffering its worst decline in more than 11 years, the Dow Jones Industrial Average piled on 1,167.14 points (4.89 per cent) to reach 25,018.16. The broad-based S&P 500 also jumped 135.67 points (4.94 per cent) to 2,882.23, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index gained 393.58 points (4.95 per cent) to 8,344.25. Analysts expect the volatility to continue in light of uncertainty of how much the coronavirus will spread in the United States, the extent it further dampens activity in the world's biggest economy and the robustness of the US policy response. "I don't think everyone is going to go out today fully confident that the bottom is in," said Briefing.com analyst Patrick O'Hare. The market "is sniffing something coming down the pike," O'Hare said of an expected government stimulus, before adding … [Read more...] about Dow up 4.9% as US stocks end volatile session sharply higher

China PMI offers tiny relief to Asia as stocks head for dire end to quarter

HONG KONG: Asian shares were set to close out a calamitous quarter by eking out a small rally on Tuesday (Mar 31) as factory data from China held out the hope of a revival in activity, even as much of the rest of the world shut down. China's official manufacturing purchasing managers' index (PMI) bounced to 52.0 in March, up from a record-low 35.7 in February and topping forecasts of 45.0. Analysts cautioned the underlying activity probably remained well below par as the improvement measures the net balance of firms reporting an expansion or contraction. China's National Bureau of Statistics also warned that the rebound didn't signal a stabilisation in activity, and was partly due to the very low base in February. "The fact that the numbers were not in the 60s shows that this is not going to be a V shaped recovery," said Cliff Tan, East Asia head of global markets research at MUFG. The number was enough of a relief though to help MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares … [Read more...] about China PMI offers tiny relief to Asia as stocks head for dire end to quarter
