In his first public speech since leaving office, former United States president Donald Trump has called for Republican Party unity while indicating that he might launch a third presidential bid in 2024 even as he slammed the Biden administration, claiming that the country has gone from 'America First' to 'America Last' in just one month. Photograph: Carlos Barria/Reuters Speaking at the Conservative Political Action Committee in Orlando, Florida on Sunday, the 74-year-old leader, who left the White House on January 20, stopped short of announcing to run for the president in 2024, although he gave enough indications that he is moving in that direction. "We will take back the House. We will win the Senate and then a Republican president would triumph the White House. I wonder, who that will be," he said amidst cheers from his supporters at the annual session of the committee. Trump, however, ruled out forming a new party, arguing that such a move will split votes of … [Read more...] about We will prevail: Trump hints at 2024 presidential bid

IPL gave us the platform to express: Rahane IMAGE: Ajinkya Rahane said the IPL gave players the perfect platform to express themselves in the shortest format of the game. Photograph: BCCI/Twitter The Indian Premier League (IPL) has not only provided uncapped Indian players an opportunity to showcase their talent against the best in the business, but also given overseas players a chance to make an impression. But Dale Steyn has said he turned his back on the IPL because he found the PSL and the Sri Lankan Premier League 'slightly more rewarding as a player'. India's Test vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane, on Tuesday, rubbished all the claims which stated that sometimes the emphasis is on the money in the IPL rather than the game. Rahane, who has even captained teams in the showpiece event, said the IPL gave players the perfect platform to express themselves in the shortest format of the game. "See, I am here to talk about the fourth Test match and not here to talk … [Read more...] about Rahane rubbishes Steyn’s PSL vs IPL remark
NEW YORK: Wall Street stocks finished a topsy-turvy session sharply higher on Tuesday (Mar 10) in anticipation of US stimulus measures as oil prices bounced. A day after suffering its worst decline in more than 11 years, the Dow Jones Industrial Average piled on 1,167.14 points (4.89 per cent) to reach 25,018.16. The broad-based S&P 500 also jumped 135.67 points (4.94 per cent) to 2,882.23, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index gained 393.58 points (4.95 per cent) to 8,344.25. Analysts expect the volatility to continue in light of uncertainty of how much the coronavirus will spread in the United States, the extent it further dampens activity in the world's biggest economy and the robustness of the US policy response. "I don't think everyone is going to go out today fully confident that the bottom is in," said Briefing.com analyst Patrick O'Hare. The market "is sniffing something coming down the pike," O'Hare said of an expected government stimulus, before adding … [Read more...] about Dow up 4.9% as US stocks end volatile session sharply higher
Vice President Harris on Monday pushed for Congress to provide aid to cities impacted by the coronavirus pandemic by passing the administration’s $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief package. “This plan includes critical support for those communities that have been hardest hit, keeping small businesses open and first responders on the job,” she said during her virtual keynote address at CityLab. The package directs $350 billion in funds to state and local governments, a provision Republicans have criticized. The Senate is expected to vote on the package this week after the House passed it early Saturday morning. ADVERTISEMENT “With so many people living so close together, cities have been particularly hard hit. City leaders around the world have responded with innovation,” Harris said, mentioning outdoor clinics, redesigned public spaces, and Wi-Fi hot spots. “[The] president and I are pushing the United States Congress to finish passing our American Rescue Plan so cities … [Read more...] about Harris pushes for support for cities in coronavirus relief package
Source: "Othello's Lamentation" by William Salter, from Wikimedia Commons / CC BY-SA 4.0 We start this series of comments on aesthetic cognitivism with reflections by the psychologist Ellen Winner, author of the book How Art Works: A Psychological Exploration . Aesthetic cognitivism refers to the philosophical claim that aesthetic engagement advances knowledge and enhances understanding. Is this claim true? How would we know? By Ellen Winner In his book, Ways of Worldmaking , philosopher Nelson Goodman makes the bold claim that “the arts must be taken no less seriously than the sciences as modes of discovery, creation, and enlargement of knowledge in the broad sense of advancement of the understanding” (Goodman, 1978, p. 102). Painter György Kepes said that both the artist and the scientist “reach beneath surface phenomena to discover basic natural pattern and basic natural process" (Kepes, 1960, p. 6). These statements have a “feel right” quality to them, … [Read more...] about What Does Aesthetic Cognitivism Really Mean, Anyway?
WASHINGTON: Two US Republican lawmakers, Senator Ted Cruz and Rep Paul Gosar, said on Sunday (Mar 8) they will quarantine themselves after contact at a late February gathering of conservatives with someone who has since tested positive for coronavirus. Cruz and Gosar were among the US politicians and activists who gathered just outside Washington Feb 26 to 29 for the annual Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), which met this year under the theme America vs. Socialism. The conference organiser, American Conservative Union Chairman Matt Schlapp, said he had "incidental" contact with the attendee who tested positive, but that he felt "healthy as a horse" and had not heard of anyone else falling ill.
