Epic Games , the company behind Fortnite , said it has raised $1 billion in new funding and has reached a valuation of $28.7 billion. The fundraising round includes another $200 million strategic investment from Sony Group Corp., as the Japanese conglomerate renamed itself recently. Sony last summer had put $250 million into the privately held gaming concern. Other investors include Appaloosa, T. Rowe Price, KKR, AllianceBernstein, Altimeter, Luxor Capital, and funds and accounts managed by Fidelity and BlackRock. Epic has a single class of common stock, and founder and CEO Tim Sweeney remains the company’s controlling shareholder. In announcing the injection of capital, Sweeney said it would help advance Epic’s efforts in technology, entertainment and what it calls “socially connected online services.” Through Fortnite and its other platforms, the company has promoted what it calls a “metaverse.” In particular during Covid-19, it has drawn sizable online crowds … [Read more...] about ‘Fortnite’ Maker Epic Games Raises $1B From Sony And Others, Claims $28.7B Valuation

What just happened? This is the PlayStation 5's first big update since its launch in November. The biggest new feature is external drive support (though for storage, not playing games). It should be a welcome update for those struggling with storage space. Overall, the update seems to be geared towards greater interoperability between PS4 and PS5 gamers. Five months after its initial release, the PlayStation 5 is getting its first major update. Sony outlined the details in a recent blog post , and includes updates to storage options and more social and personalization control. Probably the most welcome new feature will be the ability to store PS5 games on external USB drives. Before, external storage could only be used for PS4 games, with newer PS5 titles required to use the built-in SSD. Sony recommends transferring PS5 games to external drives in lieu of re-downloading or copying from the disk. That said, this is only meant for storage when not gaming. PS5 games still have to … [Read more...] about Sony unveils first major update for PlayStation 5

So you’re considering a projector? Perhaps you’re a movie fan who wants to curate their own home cinema night, popcorn and all. Or you’re a gamer who wants to step out onto a distant planet and blast life-sized aliens to smithereens? With the right projector you can do all of these things, and so much more. If you are indeed ready to take the plunge, or are looking to upgrade, there are a few considerations to take into account. Projectors require a little more planning and setting up when compared with televisions. To get the best out of one, you’ll need to attach it to the ceiling, as – unlike TVs – you’ll need distance between the lens and the screen to project. (Unless of course, you go for a short throw model, but we’ll talk a little more on this later.) A ceiling-mounted beamer also eliminates the possibility of shadows cast by passing people or pets. Not all need to be ceiling mounted as smaller projectors can be moved in and out of a room as needed, but Sony’s range … [Read more...] about Should I buy a Sony projector?
Fortnite maker Epic Games has scooped together $1bn in funding to help its "long-term vision for the Metaverse". A fifth of that - $200m - comes from PlayStation owner Sony, and will apparently cement its already-close relationship with Epic further. In a press release, Epic listed more than a dozen non-gaming companies which had collectively pumped in that $1bn. Sony, which frequently gives out free Fortnite cosmetics via PlayStation Plus, got a special mention: "This round includes an additional $200m strategic investment from Sony Group Corporation," Epic wrote, "which builds on the already close relationship between the two companies and reinforces their shared mission to advance the state of the art in technology, entertainment, and socially-connected online services." Epic said it was now worth $28.7bn, and noted its boss Tim Sweeney remained the controlling shareholder. "We are grateful to our new and existing investors who support our vision for Epic and the … [Read more...] about Epic Games secures $1bn funding, including $200m from Sony
Epic Games has announced it completed a $1 billion round of funding, which it said would allow the company to support future growth opportunities. Sony chipped in $200 million, which Epic Games said builds on the "already close relationship" between the two companies. Sony acquired a minority interest in Epic Games last year, through a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sony in an investment deal worth $250 million as part of a $1.78 billion funding round. Appaloosa Management, Baillie Gifford, Fidelity Management, and various funds managed by BlackRock, KKR, and ParkWest were also among the investors for the latest round of funding. The latest funding round comes as Epic Games prepares to face Apple head-on in US court next month for a dispute over the latter's app store commission fees . Since filing the lawsuit, Epic Games has been arguing that it wants regulators to "address Apple's alleged anti-competitive conduct". In a document filed for the upcoming court hearing, Epic … [Read more...] about Epic Games receives another $1 billion in funding with $200 million from Sony
