A Gut Feeling About ALS
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis ( ALS ) is a progressive neurological disease that destroys the neurons that control voluntary muscle movements. The first symptoms of ALS are typically weakness in the limbs and muscle twitches, but the illness eventually disrupts patients’ abilities to move, speak, and even breathe. Treatments exist to extend patient quality of life, but only for a matter of months. There is currently no cure for ALS, and those who develop the disease typically die from respiratory failure within two to five years following the emergence of symptoms. Researchers have yet to determine a full etiology for ALS. Genetics does play a partial role, with between 5 percent and 10 percent of those diagnosed with the disease being genetically predisposed to it. This is known as familial ALS (fALS). The remaining cases emerge following exposure to environmental hazards and are known as sporadic ALS (sALS). A strong association between cigarette smoking and sALS has been … [Read more...] about A Gut Feeling About ALS
Somkid’s departure sees baht drop further
The baht’s current shine as the ‘safe’ current in Asia has lost its lustre. After riding high as Asia’s best performing currency last year, the baht has wiped out all of its 8% gains this year during the Covid-19 crisis, and yesterday’s announcement of the resignations of Deputy PM Somkid Jatusripitak and “the four big boys” (4 of Prayut Chan-o-cha’s economic ministers) saw it drop even further, reflecting investors’ concerns about the government’s continued economic policies. Reuter’s reports that it’s now Asia’s weakest currency against the US dollar, down 5.5% year-on-year, and the New York Time calls Thailand Southeast Asia’s “worst performing economy” . The baht’s value fell to 31.69 against the greenback as of 6:54pm yesterday from 31:56 on Wednesday. At one point it touched 31.76. This is in stark contrast with last year, when the baht emerged as Asia’s top performing currency, eclipsing the 30 baht mark before the New Year, driven by the country’s large current … [Read more...] about Somkid’s departure sees baht drop further
Warning over payment protection insurance
MPs have been told of vulnerable consumers being mis- sold payment protection insurance, echoing a scandal that has seen billions of pounds paid out in the UK. Regulating the sale of payment protection insurance (PPI), which is insurance designed to cover loan repayments when borrowers fall sick, die, are made redundant, or fall bankrupt, is among the targets of MPs working on the Credit Contracts and Financial Services Law Reform Bill overhaul of lending laws. But they have been told by the Commerce Commission, which has acted on four cases of PPI abuse in the past five years, that the proposed regulation of PPI is not tough enough. There's little transparency about sales of PPI which is generally made to borrowers when they apply for a loan. But budget advisory services and consumer advocates have submitted claims that PPI is sometimes sold to people on guaranteed incomes such as beneficiaries and superannuitants, that some policyholders have redundancy cover they could … [Read more...] about Warning over payment protection insurance
