Home Women Women oi-Lekhaka By Deepannita Das on March 8, 2021 It's been years and still, we celebrate International Women's Day but while some believe that it has resulted due to a feminist cause, only a handful of us know that this day is traced back to the labour movement in Germany. It was in 1911 when the first-ever Women's Day was organised by Clara Zetkin, a German Marxist theorist, and an advocate for women rights. Cut to the present, today, 8 March marks International Women's Day and this year's theme is Choose To Challenge. Well, we all have amazing women around us who have made this world a better place to live in- be it women leaders or entrepreneurs. B R Ambedkar once said, 'I measure the progress of a community by the degree of progress which women have achieved.' On this extraordinary day, five women have come forward to share their journeys and experiences which will motivate you to the core to build a … [Read more...] about International Women’s Day 2021: Quotes From Women Leaders And Entrepreneurs That Will Inspire You

Louisiana lawmakers are reworking this law that abolished life without parole sentences for juveniles
Months after a new law was passed that some advocates believed would effectively abolish the sentence of life without parole for juveniles in Louisiana, lawmakers are taking steps to narrow its scope. The first law, which took effect in August, grants automatic parole eligibility to those convicted of crimes as children once they have served 25 years and meet certain pre-release qualifications. Some juvenile justice advocates cautiously celebrated when they read the bill, believing it cleared the way for all juvenile lifers to receive an automatic parole hearing. As kids, they were sentenced to a lifetime in prison. A new law might give them a second chance A new law could give some of Louisiana's juvenile lifers a chance at freedom, part of a years-long push to rethink prison sentences in the sta… But state Rep. Ted James, D-Baton Rouge, who sponsored the original bill, said it was only meant to apply to "virtual" juvenile lifers, or those serving so many … [Read more...] about Louisiana lawmakers are reworking this law that abolished life without parole sentences for juveniles
Sinas: Police raids that killed 9 activists ‘legitimate’
MANILA, Philippines—Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Debold Sinas on Monday (March 8) said its simultaneous operations in Southern Tagalog that led to the killing and arrest of several activists were “legitimate.” The police raids on Sunday (March 7) led to the killing of nine people in the provinces of Batangas, Cavite, Laguna and Rizal. At least 15 people had been arrested and four escaped. “It’s a legitimate operation because they are covered by search warrants,” Sinas said. “If you only knew how hard it its to secure search warrants then you would understand you have to justify to the judge and bring new witnesses,” he told reporters, speaking in Filipino. “Those are legitimate operations covered properly by the documents issued by the court,” he said. Security forces, he said, had search warrants for cases of illegal possession of firearms and explosives charges. Activist groups called for an investigation into the police operations, which they said were … [Read more...] about Sinas: Police raids that killed 9 activists ‘legitimate’
AI reveals current drugs that may help combat Alzheimer’s
Researchers have developed a method based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) that rapidly identifies currently available medications that may treat Alzheimer’s disease . The method could represent a rapid and inexpensive way to repurpose existing therapies into new treatments for this progressive, debilitating neurodegenerative condition. Importantly, it could also help reveal new, unexplored targets for therapy by pointing to mechanisms of drug action. “Repurposing FDA-approved drugs for Alzheimer’s disease is an attractive idea that can help accelerate the arrival of effective treatment -- but unfortunately, even for previously approved drugs, clinical trials require substantial resources, making it impossible to evaluate every drug in patients with Alzheimer’s disease,” said researcher Artem Sokolov from Harvard Medical School . For the study, published in Nature Communications , the team described their framework, called DRIAD (Drug Repurposing In Alzheimer’s … [Read more...] about AI reveals current drugs that may help combat Alzheimer’s

Gem Wizards Tactics is bite-size strategy that pits potato wizards against corporate demons
A pair of demons surround the nearest keep. My team includes a potato armed with sunglasses and a water hose, a robed forest witch (who is also a potato), and a demon-powered bulldozer named George Cybercrime. The splashmaster potato uses his pressurized hose to bump the demons backward into a nearby river. Mr. Cybercrime plows through the nearby forests, paving new road tiles as he rumbles, allowing my mage to close in and use her storm spell to electrocute the now soaking wet enemies for extra damage. It's my first time combining water, lightning, and fresh asphalt to kill videogame demons, but I'm into it. Gem Wizards Tactics is a turn-based strategy game that uses terraforming, permadeath, and a healthy dose of fantasy humor to craft a tiny, arcade-like tactics game with an impressive layer of strategic depth. Each match generates a random battlefield of forests, rivers, plains, and mountains, along with several keeps and groups of enemies. The goal is to capture a handful … [Read more...] about Gem Wizards Tactics is bite-size strategy that pits potato wizards against corporate demons
