WARSAW: The success of Poland's Iga Swiatek has helped bring a WTA women's tournament back to the country's coast after an absence of more than 10 years and local fans will get the chance to see her play, the organisers said on Monday. Teenager Swiatek crushed American Sofia Kenin 6-4 6-1 to triumph at the rescheduled French Open in October and became Poland's first Grand Slam singles champion. The 19-year-old was also the youngest woman to win the title since Monica Seles in 1992, the first Polish woman to reach the Roland Garros final in 81 years and the first at any major since Agnieszka Radwanska at Wimbledon in 2012. "For sure Iga's result inspired us and helped (us) to organise this tournament. Such ideas have been around for a long time, but it was quite hard to put many things together...," Iga's father Tomasz, CEO of the tournament's organisers Tennis Consulting, told Reuters. "To organise such a tournament there must also be the interest of sponsors...(Iga's … [Read more...] about Swiatek’s success helps Poland revive coastal tournament

Poland sets Jun 28 date for rescheduled presidential election
WARSAW: Poland picked Jun 28 on Wednesday (Jun 3) as a new date for a presidential election that was cancelled last month amid the coronavirus pandemic, setting the stage for a short campaign that could weaken the country's nationalist government. Planning for the election had plunged Poland into political turmoil after the ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party abruptly called it off four days before the original May 10 date. "I would like it very much if we could finally pick the head of state. It's a matter of ... Polish statehood," Elzbieta Witek, the speaker of the lower house of parliament, said in a televised speech announcing the new schedule. For PiS, the election is vital to cementing its grip on power and making further progress on its conservative agenda. The incumbent Andrzej Duda, a PiS ally, is the frontrunner, although his lead has shrunk in recent days amid signs of economic contraction due to the coronavirus outbreak. For Warsaw Mayor Rafal Trzaskowski, the … [Read more...] about Poland sets Jun 28 date for rescheduled presidential election
Poland to reopen hotels and shopping malls on May 4
WARSAW: Polish hotels and shopping malls will reopen on May 4 and pre-schools will have the option to open on May 6, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said on Wednesday (Apr 29), part of efforts to ease restrictions imposed to curb the spread of the new coronavirus. Poland, the largest economy in the European Union's eastern wing, started relaxing some of its curbs on public life earlier in April, alongside other countries keen to prop up industry damaged by the pandemic. Morawiecki also reaffirmed the government's plan to hold a presidential election as scheduled on May 10, or with a delay of a couple of weeks at most, despite calls from opposition parties and others for a much longer delay. Further steps to unfreeze the economy, including a reopening of restaurants, will be announced at a later date, Morawiecki said. Poles are still required to wear masks in public and schools will remain closed until May 24. The government has also not given any indication when it might … [Read more...] about Poland to reopen hotels and shopping malls on May 4
Poland to reopen outdoor playgrounds as it eases sports curbs
WARSAW: Poland plans to reopen outdoor sports areas on May 4 and will allow top league football matches to be played at the end of next month, as part of an easing of restrictions put in place to stop the spread of the coronavirus. Poland started relaxing some of the curbs earlier in April, saying they were costly for the economy. It has reopened forests and parks and eased rules on the number of customers in shops. By Saturday (Apr 25), the European Union member state of 38 million had reported 11,067 cases and 499 deaths. "Sport is an important part of the national economy, which contributes to improving health and we are aware how important it is to restore normality," Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki told a news conference on Saturday. He added that the next stage of easing sport restrictions would include reopening indoor sports halls, followed by swimming pools and fitness clubs. WARSAW: Poland saw its biggest spike in coronavirus cases on Sunday (Apr 19) with 545 new infections recorded, according to health ministry data, a day before the country plans to ease some of its pandemic-related restrictions.
