As the coronavirus forces many of us to work from home, now is the time to consider the strange hybrid space of the home office. We find ourselves jabbing away at our keyboards in strange places, a kind of interior limbo. I have been working from home for 25 years, and I know what I am doing. Here is my advice for what you will really need over the coming unsettling weeks and months. A DEDICATED SPACE You may not have room at home for a separate office but, if it can be done, make it a priority. If not, then under no circumstances try to make a “home office” out of a hopeless space that cannot be turned to any other use – a half-landing, a bit of leftover corridor. It will feel temporary and uncomfortable, a domestic exile. If you are short of space, try to reimagine a part of the living area as a temporary office – one end of the sofa or a dining table, for example. It is better to be in a decent room with natural light than an ad-hoc corner beside the vacuum cleaner. … [Read more...] about Tips on how to set up a comfortable – and stylish – home office space

Biggie Smalls’ mother reveals why she didn’t cry at his funeral as Netflix doc charts his rise from drug dealing teen
NUMB with grief, Voletta Wallace looked out at the crowds lining the streets of Brooklyn to pay their respects to her son, Christopher - but didn’t shed a tear. The single mother had just buried her only child - known to the world as the Notorious B.I.G - after his tragic death at the age of 24. But, as she reveals in the new Netflix documentary Biggie: I Have A Story To Tell, it was not until she heard his album, prophetically named Life After Death, that she was able to cry. “Coming from that funeral I felt I was in a dream,” she says. “I wasn’t crying. That day it was just too heavy. I never shed a tear. I didn’t have any. “I saw the crowd. And thought ‘Oh my God, this kid was well loved. That’s when I saw the love.’ “It only really hit me when I listened [to his album]. I only listened to his album once, I didn’t want to listen twice. Then the tears came.” With exclusive access to family and childhood friends, the documentary looks at the life of B.I.G, … [Read more...] about Biggie Smalls’ mother reveals why she didn’t cry at his funeral as Netflix doc charts his rise from drug dealing teen
How a tiny startup is reinventing the DVR for the cord-cutter era
advertisement advertisement advertisement The rise of cord cutting and streaming video was supposed to render the digital video recorder (DVR) irrelevant. In theory, you shouldn’t need to record anything when services like Netflix and Amazon Prime make everything available on demand. advertisement advertisement But now that every big media company has its own streaming service, all that instant gratification has come at a cost. Watching TV now means bouncing between a dozen different apps, each with its own separate menu system, catalog, and watch list. Say what you will about the stodginess of cable, at least it put everything in one place. That’s why a tiny company called Fancy Bits, founded by a pair of former GitHub employees, is bringing the DVR back. The company’s $8 per month Channels service takes video from a wide range of sources—online cable channel feeds, live-streaming apps, over-the-air broadcasts, and even … [Read more...] about How a tiny startup is reinventing the DVR for the cord-cutter era

Indonesia stands at the crossroads of a waste crisis and plastics problem
JAKARTA: Indonesia is one of the biggest contributors to plastic pollution in the ocean. It became a dumping ground for the world’s plastic waste after China’s ban on trash imports. And now, a new crisis is brewing in the country. Its landfills are running out of space, even with only 60 to 70 per cent of urban waste being collected and taken to its hundreds of landfills. Indonesia’s largest landfill, Bantar Gebang — the only one serving the capital, Jakarta — will run out of space next year, officials have said. It is not the only one, however, facing a deadline. Owing to urban growth and increasing incomes, Indonesia’s mountains of waste are growing faster than anyone had imagined. “Every zone is almost full because of the increase in waste,” said Bagong Suyoto, head of the National Waste Coalition. The country produces nearly 200,000 tonnes of waste a day — not only plastic but also paper, rubber, food, et cetera. A lack of funding and weak law enforcement, however, … [Read more...] about Indonesia stands at the crossroads of a waste crisis and plastics problem
