Air Canada CEO urges Trudeau’s government to relax travel curbs: Report

TORONTO: Air Canada Chief Executive Officer Calin Rovinescu on Thursday (Jun 11) urged the Canadian government to relax travel restrictions as they have been hurting the company's sales, Bloomberg News reported. Rovinescu called the government's curbs on travelers "disproportionate" as the COVID-19 pandemic was easing in many parts of the country, the report said. "Enable us to do some reasonable amounts of business," he said, according to the report, while speaking on a webcast with publishing and event production company Aviation Week. Rovinescu's remarks were in the context of a letter sent to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau from the Canadian travel and tourism industry, calling for a national plan to cut back pandemic travel restrictions, Air Canada said. He is a signatory to the letter, which featured in the Globe and Mail newspaper on Thursday. The Sunday Times said Johnson wanted to relax planning restrictions that stop many pubs, cafes and restaurants from using outside areas, and also to make it legal to hold weddings outside - something currently limited to Jews and Quakers. Indoor weddings and funerals with up to 10 people attending would also be permitted from early July, while places of worship would be allowed to reopen for private prayer from Jun 15, as part of plans to be announced in the coming week, the newspaper said. "Boris wants us back to normal, or as near to it as possible, before the summer," the newspaper quoted a senior source as saying, adding the prime minister was concerned about forecasts of a sharp rise in unemployment. COVID-19: Irish PM says good chance social distancing rule can be relaxed

DUBLIN: Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar raised the prospect on Friday (May 29) of halving social distancing rules from two metres to one if the rate of coronavirus infections comes down further in a potential boost to still shuttered restaurants and pubs. Facing one of the longest shutdowns in Europe, Ireland's hospitality sector has called for the guidelines to be eased in line with a number of other European countries, saying it could be the difference between some operators reopening or not. "Before we can relax that rule and maybe reduce it to 1 (metre), which I know a lot of people would like, we just need to see the virus come down a bit more. We're not at that point yet but I think there's a good chance we get there, just not quite yet," Varadkar told Ireland's FM104 radio station. The daily number of new COVID-19 cases has stayed below 100 for 13 of the last 14 days and the so-called "reproduction rate" narrowed further to 0.4 to 0.5 this week, a trend the country's … [Read more...] about COVID-19: Irish PM says good chance social distancing rule can be relaxed
