Good news, disabled Australians! You'll soon be getting an app that will implement a welfare compliance regime designed by the people who brought you robo-debt. But don't worry, it'll have blockchain. No, this isn't good news at all. What makes it worse is that it's clear the government wants to extend technology-driven compliance to all Australians, with an emphasis on cracking down on your mistakes, not theirs. Kathryn Campbell, Secretary of the Department of Social Services, says the long-term plan is to have one app for all Commonwealth government services. "One to rule the world," she said last month, apparently oblivious to how evil that sounds. Senators are already worried that the disability app, intended to be used by participants in the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) to claim expenses against their support plan, will go the way of COVIDSafe : Millions of dollars spent on technology that doesn't really do the job. The intention was to fix a poor web … [Read more...] about NDIS gets a government app with blockchain but no ethics

The ocean can no longer be a climate victim
Over the past several decades as the world has come to understand the threat of climate change, the ocean has been portrayed primarily as a victim. Alarm bells about warming, acidification, sea-level rise, coral bleaching, species migration and other symptoms have dominated headlines. But this narrative misses the greater point. The ocean is also one of the most powerful tools we have to help head off the worst consequences of global climate change. The ocean contains 96 percent of the water on Earth and serves as the foundation for and ultimate source of all life on the planet as well as the primary regulator of our global climate system. As Congress and the Biden administration consider their next round of investment on climate change and infrastructure, they must keep the ocean and its potential contributions squarely in their sights. Earlier this week, a new study from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) found that estimates of the capacity of the ocean's … [Read more...] about The ocean can no longer be a climate victim
The making of Clock Tower: “The most important thing for me was the stillness”
Survival horror has been a mainstay of gaming for decades now; horror and hiding in cupboards go hand-in-hand it seems. However, some of the first seeds of the genre lay in the widely revered and hugely unsettling Japanese point-and-click adventure game, Clock Tower. First released on the SNES in 1995, it sees you playing a 14-year-old orphan girl trapped in a mansion of unknowable terrors, as you desperately try to outpace an unrelenting golden-haired child wielding a gigantic pair of scissors. He can turn up anytime, and does so with reckless glee. Lacking the fiery arsenal of weapons seen in the likes of Resident Evil, you have to escape using a mix of wits and point-and-click puzzle action (the sort where a slice of ham can mean life or death), plus, plenty of hiding until the horrors pass. While the dexterous mashing of buttons may grant short-lived escape, you'll also find yourself panicked – meaning you're likely to trip up as you run from your tiny, pointy pursuer. Grim, … [Read more...] about The making of Clock Tower: “The most important thing for me was the stillness”
The sheer hard work that goes into making niche food products
Running a niche home food business requires a lot of time and attention to detail. The products on offer are not cheap and entrepreneurs say it’s due to the sheer amount of sweat and tears expanded in making these products, often with little or no help at all. For Ethan Wong, the founder of home-based tempeh chip brand Truly Gourmet, his commitment to producing the best starts from the ground up. Wong makes his tempeh from scratch, fermenting it himself. Every day, he wakes up at 5am and spends three hours hand-slicing the tempeh before manually frying it in a combination of rice bran oil and canola oil. Wong makes his tempeh from scratch and every day he spends three hours hand slicing tempeh into thin pieces. — ETHAN WONG The results speak for themselves – Wong’s chips are delicious – thin, crispy shards that are perfectly fried (but not overly oily) and seasoned delicately with sea salt. “A lot of people have this misconception that making tempeh chips just involves … [Read more...] about The sheer hard work that goes into making niche food products
Fight over $47 sea urchin dish prompts intervention from Chinese governor
The Governor of the Chinese island of Hainan said the authorities will conduct a “deeper investigation” after a scandal erupted this week over a tourist claiming that a US$35 (S$47) dish of steamed sea urchin mixed with egg did not contain any urchin meat. The incident made headlines after the tourist posted a short video on social media showing a dish that was supposed to contain six urchins steamed with egg at a restaurant in Sanya last week. In the video the tourist claims the dish contains no urchin meat at all and was just egg. Sanya, nicknamed China’s Hawaii, is among the country’s top domestic tourist destinations, making the island’s government wary of any potential threats to tourism dollars. The incident happened on the evening of Friday (April 9) last week when the tourist, identified by his surname Zhang, and four other tourists ate supper at Yunqi Guancanghai Restaurant. They ordered six dishes, including the urchin one, and were charged 2,655 yuan (S$543.50) … [Read more...] about Fight over $47 sea urchin dish prompts intervention from Chinese governor
Organic Vs Non-Organic Foods: Pros And Cons And Which One Is Better
Home Health Wellness Wellness oi-Shivangi Karn By Shivangi Karn on April 14, 2021 The global marketplace of organic foods has grown drastically over the last few decades with around 80 billion Euros spent every year on organic products, says a study.
