Tunisia Needs Another Revolution | Opinion

In January, following the Tunisian revolution's tenth anniversary, riots took place across the country. Protesters marched against inequality, corruption and police brutality, despite a COVID-19 curfew. The rioters were mostly teenagers aged 14-17, according to Khaled Hayouni , interior ministry spokesperson. They clashed with the police, who used tear gas to disperse them. In Tunisia, 15-24-year-olds represent 12.9 percent of the population. According to human rights groups at least 1,000 people were arrested during six nights of riots. The Tunisian government reported arresting 670 people. The contrast in figures highlights the lack of transparency in the so-called Arab democracy. The Tunisian League for Human rights (LTDH) stated that those who didn't participate in the riots were arrested arbitrarily and taken by force from their homes. Activists who showed support for the protests on social media were arrested and risk six years imprisonment. Such was the case … [Read more...] about Tunisia Needs Another Revolution | Opinion

Egypt Arrests Dissidents’ Families Under Allies’ Noses | Opinion

In November 2019, Hasiba Mahsoob, a 50-year-old Egyptian businesswoman , was arrested in public by security forces in Alexandria, Egypt. They took her to an undisclosed location, probably one of the National Security Agency's illegal detention sites, where they routinely "disappear" dissidents. Her whereabouts weren't revealed until 67 days later, on January 27, 2020, when her captors finally took her before a prosecutor. Prosecutors, as usual , did not investigate her forced disappearance and ordered her detained pending "investigation," rubber-stamping unsupported security allegations that she was a member of an unnamed "terrorist" group. None of this is unusual. Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi's government has, since late 2013, arrested and prosecuted tens of thousands of peaceful critics, journalists, academics and human rights defenders in an " assembly line " of serious abuse. But Mahsoob was not targeted for any political involvement. She was apparently … [Read more...] about Egypt Arrests Dissidents’ Families Under Allies’ Noses | Opinion

The Republican Trump Meltdown and the Fight Over the Democratic Party’s Future

Donald Trump in West Virginia. Photo: Jeff Swensen/Getty Images About a decade ago, it became clear to some of us that the Republican and Democratic parties were not at all alike. The two were different, not just in their beliefs but in their methods and political style. The Republican Party was ethnically, economically, and ideologically homogenous. Democrats claimed support from racial minorities along with whites, and unions, consumer advocates, and environmentalists along with business, and moderates as well as liberals, yielding a careful balance of ideas and interests. As a virtually all-white party, whose economic support came exclusively from business and which identified conservatism as its sole legitimate ideological tradition, the Republican Party operated in a very different style. Trump’s capture of the Republican nomination is the most emphatic, but only the most recent, indication that the Republican Party’s internal culture is a total failure. Not long ago, … [Read more...] about The Republican Trump Meltdown and the Fight Over the Democratic Party’s Future
